In the VI Time Machine section we regularly present new stories from the past, and every weekend we publish an article from our extensive archive. This time we travel back to June 2011, when we looked back on his career with Arnold Bruggink. The then 33-year-old technician had just ended his professional career after a final season with FC Twente. The midfielder and attacker also celebrated his breakthrough there in the mid-90s. This was followed by stints at PSV, Real Mallorca, SC Heerenveen and again Real Mallorca before he returned to Enschede in 2010. “I was able to achieve a great career in my own way,” said Bruggink in the farewell interview. He added: "Looking back, the early days are the best phase of your professional career. As a young player you played carefree football. I was a dribbler on the left and thought: What do I care, I'll just do my actions." At first he was also surprised by the intensity of professional football. "Jan van Halst could really piss you off or give you a hard kick in training. Nico-Jan Hoogma was also a tough guy. I was the big talent and was tested. In the end, what counts is that you show yourself. No matter how or where you come in, if you can play football, you will be quickly accepted." Image "Rob Baan made my debut at Het Diekman against Go Ahead Eagles. I still remember that Peter Rufai, the son of the Nigerian king, was in goal. The day before, Baan came to me and said: 'Prince Polley and Michael Mols are injured, you're playing in the front line tomorrow.' I was already shaking. During the game I missed two good chances. I will never forget Evert ten Napel's comment on TV that evening: 'Bruggink, great talent, still lacks a bit of strength.' In my last season we finished third in the Eredivisie. We had a good team with players like John Bosman, Michel Boerebach, Sander Boschker, Juul Ellerman, Paul Bosvelt, Berthil ter Avest and Theo ten Caat. At one point in the spring we were even in second place. But everything went wrong against RKC. If we had won the game, we would have been top of the league. We obviously couldn't handle this pressure. After half an hour we were 3-0 down. As the year progressed I came to the conclusion that I wanted to develop further and move to PSV. Coach Hans Meyer didn't like that at all, he said I should definitely stay at FC Twente for another year. I had played all the games this season, but Meyer put me on the bench in the last home game against NAC. He supposedly wanted to play with the team for next season, but I thought that was pretty childish. A few months later, Meyer himself was gone too. That's how it works in football."

What happens next

Following his retirement, Bruggink remains an inspirational figure in football and is expected to return, possibly in a coaching or advisory role. His experience could also be important for the upcoming 2026 World Cup when it comes to promoting young talent. Fans and experts will be watching closely to see if he gets involved in football in any way.
