Analysis Tolu Arokodare: Ajax gets more than just one

According to Vi.

Background

Tolu Arokodare, the 1.97 m tall Nigerian striker, moved from Cardiff City to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2024. Despite his impressive physical presence and his goalscoring rate in the second Bundesliga, where he played for FC St. Pauli, he did not find the rhythm of play he wanted at Wolves. Ajax could now take the opportunity to offer Arokodare a new platform to fully exploit its potential.

Why this is important

Ajax's possible signing of Tolu Arokodare could be a significant addition to Amsterdam's attack. Arokodare not only has the physical presence that can be an asset in the Eredivisie, but also the ability to score in crucial moments, as shown by his goal against the best defense in Europe. Ajax could benefit from his versatility, especially if they want to expand their attacking options.

• Ajax are interested in Tolu Arokodare, a Nigerian striker who can do more than just win aerial duels, after his turbulent time at Wolverhampton.
• Analysis Tolu Arokodare: Ajax has more than one reusable breekijzer.

The longest striker in the Premier League in the 2025/26 season, Lorenzo Lucca (2 meters 1), has already played briefly for Ajax once. And now the Amsterdammers have their eye on the second tallest striker in the richest league in the world: Tolu Arokodare (1 meter 97). Analysis of a gigantic striker who can do more than just win header duels. Where Arokodare's employment at Wolverhampton Wanderers was, to put it mildly, turbulent, the Nigerian striker maintained a remarkable "Claim to Fame" for his short stay at Wolves. He scored a goal visiting the best defense in Europe, and he did it the way he loved: through the air. Arokodare was moved from Cardiff City to Wolverhampton for €5 million in the summer of 2024. He scored a lot of goals in preparation, but coach Gary O'Neil preferred to rely on other strikers, and so Arokodare was only used sporadically. In the first half of the 2024/25 season, the 1.97 m tall attacker only made 4 appearances in the league. He scored 5 goals in 60 minutes in an FA Cup game against Wolverhampton U21 in February 2025. In January 2025, Arokodare was loaned to FC St. Pauli. In the second Bundesliga he was used significantly more and scored 7 goals in 15 games. Including an important goal in a 2-1 away win at Holstein Kiel, where he scored the winning goal with a header. Even in a game against the best defense in the Euros pas, Borussia Dortmund's defense will still exist in 2025 but is now significantly aging, Arokodare was able to score his header in a friendly in January 2025. In the summer of 2025, Arokodare returned to Wolverhampton, but again he had to be content with few appearances. Under coach Gary O'Neil, Arokodare hardly got any chances, so he requested a move to Wolverhampton's U21 in September 2025 in order to gain match practice there. This request was not inconvenient for a big club in England. Liverpool FC signed Arokodare for the U21s, which is considered a very controversial transfer in the industry as one wonders why a club like Liverpool made such a signing. Arokodare made many appearances in Liverpool's U21 team, but the discussion about his value as a player did not end until he was allowed to play a competitive game in Liverpool's first team on April 14, 2026. And what a game that was. In an away game against Manchester City that ended 2-2, Arokodare scored 2 goals, both from crosses, one from Trent Alexander-Arnold and one from Cody Gakpo. Both goals were headers. After this game, Arokodare was suddenly a sought-after player. He was observed by many other clubs, including Ajax Amsterdam, who are now serious about signing Arokodare. The change is imminent.

What happens next

It remains to be seen whether Ajax will actually do so Finally, a transfer from Tolu Arokodare will be completed, especially given his checkered time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. If the move goes through, Arokodare could take on a central role in the attack and potentially challenge other players in the squad. The next few weeks could be crucial to see whether Ajax can firm up its plans.
