Antonio Conte has expressed interest in becoming Manchester United manager through his agent. This comes at a time when Michael Carrick is under pressure over a poor start to the season. According to English media, Conte wants to take up the post immediately, while Manchester United's management has not yet decided whether to sack Carrick. Carrick is publicly supported by the club, but they are aware that the sporting performance must improve quickly. The disappointing results at the start of the season have put massive pressure on the 45-year-old Carrick and names are already being discussed for a possible successor. Conte, 57, has been without a job since leaving Napoli in the summer. He led the Neapolitans to the Serie A championship in his first season and finished second behind Inter Milan in his second season. Conte was already interested in the coaching position at Manchester United last summer when his agent held talks with sporting director Jason Wilcox. At that time, however, Manchester United decided to permanently sign Michael Carrick as coach after a short transition period. His stint at Tottenham, which began in 2021, saw him leave the club in March 2023, even though Tottenham were fourth in the league at the time and Conte had a 54% win rate there. However, his interest in taking over the club is so far only a personal matter and the question of whether the club wants to negotiate with him is still up in the air. The last two games ended unsatisfactorily for United, they drew 1-1 against Tottenham, currently 19th in the league, and lost 0-2 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Argentine central defender Lisandro Martinez was very critical of the club's management after the defeat against Atletico and questioned the support for Carrick from the management team. The next chance for Michael Carrick to prove himself is on October 18th when United travel to Leeds United.

What happens next

Manchester United management are expected to make a decision on Michael Carrick's future soon. Should Carrick be sacked, Antonio Conte could take over immediately, which would mark his return to the Premier League. Meanwhile, Carrick will look to regain the club's trust to secure his position.
