According to Newsfeed.

Background

Raphinha, who plays for FC Barcelona, has established himself as an important player and could gain additional confidence from his new role as national team captain. Hansi Flick's decision to appoint him could also increase expectations for Raphinha, both in the national team and in club football.

Why this is important

The appointment of Raphinha as the new captain of the German national team could have far-reaching effects on FC Barcelona. As a key player, Raphinha has impressed in recent games, which underlines his leadership qualities. This could also affect the dynamics within the team, especially at a time when players like Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo need to find a new role in the squad.

Key findings

• Barcelona's new hierarchy: Raphinha has the best cards.
• Hansi Flick has appointed Raphinha as the new captain of FC Barcelona.
• Barcelona's new hierarchy: Raphinha has the best cards.

There is a new hierarchy in Hansi Flick's national team that could also affect FC Barcelona. As the Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports, Raphinha was chosen by Flick as the new captain of the German national team. However, this is provisional and will be confirmed by a vote within the team. Hansi Flick's primary goal was to identify a player who would continue to play a leadership role in the team in the future. Since players like Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and Ilkay Gündogan are no longer in Hansi Flick's squad or are no longer taken into account, a new player had to be found who also has the potential to lead the team in the future. With the personnel situation after the elimination from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Flick wants to build a new hierarchy that should also include younger players more. And since Raphinha performed very convincingly in the national team's last games, Hansi Flick chose the Barcelona winger. Raphinha himself has already spoken positively about Hansi Flick's nomination. "It's a great honor, for me it's a reward for the hard work that I've done and it's also a reward for the hard work that everyone else has done because I'm in this position now because I've played a lot of games for the national team that I deserved and that I earned with hard work," said Raphinha. The final decision on the captaincy will be made in the coming days when the national team players come together for a training course. The course takes place in Düsseldorf, where a test match against the USA will be played. Whether Raphinha will actually be captain of the national team depends on the team's vote. Hansi Flick's paper, in which the team's new leadership is recorded, is then presented to the team. In Barcelona, the news that Raphinha could soon be captain of the national team has been met with mixed feelings. The future captain of FC Barcelona should actually wear the captain's armband in the club's next games. The situation at Barcelona is that both Ronald Araujo and Marc-André ter Stegen, the team's two previous captains, are expected to be out for longer periods in the next few weeks. Araujo is out injured and Ter Stegen sustained an injury in training. Therefore, coach Xavi must now appoint a new captain for the team's next games. Here too, the choice is Raphinha, so he could take on the role of captain for both the national team and his club. The question is, will Barcelona allow this if Raphinha actually becomes captain of the national team, or will Raphinha be forced to choose between the two roles? This question is still open at the moment, but it turns out that Raphinha's role will play a very, very important role in the future planning of both clubs, both FC Barcelona and the national team of Brazil.

What happens next

The final confirmation of Raphinha as captain is still pending and depends on a vote within the team. Hansi Flick plans to build a new hierarchy that will be more inclusive of younger players, which could also be important for FC Barcelona. The coming games will show whether Raphinha can shoulder the responsibility and how this will affect his performance at Barcelona.
