Chelsea sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for 111 million euros shortly before the end of the transfer window in the summer of 2023. This sale has left a huge gap in Chelsea's midfield, which Xabi Alonso must now fill. According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister is at the top of the Chelsea manager's wish list.
The 25-year-old Argentine is dissatisfied with his current situation at the Reds. While Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have received new, lucrative contracts, Mac Allister has not been offered a new contract, although his old contract runs until 2028. This puts those responsible at Liverpool in a difficult position. They have to decide whether they want to sell the midfielder for a transfer fee next January or in the summer of 2024, or whether they want to risk losing him for a free transfer in 2025.
A move to Chelsea appears to be an attractive option for Mac Allister. The club is said to be very interested in signing the playmaker. The club is keen to strengthen its midfield in January as Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso is unhappy with Enzo Fernandez's move to Manchester City and is looking for an equivalent replacement.
According to Football Insider's report, Chelsea have already started discussions about a possible move for Mac Allister in January. The report states: "Chelsea has d
he intentions to sign Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister, particularly amid doubts over his long-term future at Liverpool. Xabi Alonso is determined to strengthen his midfield in January after being unable to replace Enzo Fernandez when he left Manchester City."
Mac Allister moved from Brighton to Liverpool in the summer of 2023 for a transfer fee of £35 million. Despite being considered an important player in his first season at Liverpool, the Argentine's form at the start of this season left a lot to be desired. But recently he has shown better performances again, which was also reflected in his statistics.
However, whether Liverpool will agree to let Mac Allister leave in January depends primarily on whether the player is offered a new contract by then. If this is not the case, a change in January is quite likely.
What happens next
Liverpool face a difficult decision whether to sell Mac Allister in January or keep him until the summer of 2024. Chelsea, on the other hand, will do everything in their power to sign the Argentine playmaker to solve their midfield problems and set the stage for a successful second half of the season in the Premier League.
