Valdas Dambrauskas, coach of Azerbaijani club Sabah FK, has made a remarkable journey to success in the Champions League. The 49-year-old Lithuanian led the club to success on Tuesday evening, securing a place in the group stage of the Champions League for the coming season. Dambrauskas, who was born during the Soviet era, did not have a notable career as a player, but knew from a young age that he wanted to be a coach. He wasn't interested in a career outside of football, so nothing stopped him from getting an engineering diploma. However, he never wanted to use this diploma because unexpected financial support gave his young coaching career a boost. As a 25-year-old, Dambrauskas took part in a Lithuanian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" part. Although he didn't win the main prize, he did receive an amount of around 1,250 euros. This may not sound like much, but it had a lot of value in Lithuania in the early 2000s. Dambrauskas explained this in an interview with FourFourTwo a few years ago: "Back then, for some people it was a whole year's salary in Lithuania." Instead of spending the money in Lithuania, Dambrauskas traveled to England to start his coaching career. He enrolled at London Metropolitan University to study sports science and entered a coaching program. Even almost 25 years ago it was not possible to live only on an amount like this. “I lasted a month, then I had to get a part-time job,” Dambrauskas recalled. Fate was also kind to him in England, as he was hired as a coach by a Manchester United football school. "My English wasn't even that good back then, but I apparently made an impression and was accepted." Dambrauskas demonstrated his coaching talent at an amateur club at the ninth level of English football, the Kingsbury London Tigers. He led the club to its highest ranking ever. As a result, Dambrauskas made a name for himself again in Eastern Europe, but as a youth coach he never returned to the top clubs, but only coached unknown clubs such as Ekranas Panevezys, FK Zalgiris, RFS, Gorica, OFI Kreta and Diósgyor VTK. Last year he became coach at Sabah FK, and now he has celebrated the biggest success of his career: the club will take part in the Champions League for the first time next season. The club itself was only founded in 2015, and the success in the Champions League is also the first in the club's history. UEFA will pay Sabah FK a starting bonus of 18.62 million euros. For comparison: This is more than the market value of the entire Sabah FK squad.

What happens next

After reaching the Champions League, Sabah FK will focus on the upcoming games in the Prepare group stage. Dambrauskas will continue to play a key role as coach in preparing the team for the challenges at the highest level. Expectations for the club will rise and it remains to be seen how they will fare against some of the best Champions League clubs.
