Background

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's captain, has established himself as an indispensable player in the squad. His performances and respect from fans could make him a target for other Premier League clubs, while also leading United's ambitions next season.

Why this is important

Bruno Fernandes has established himself as a key player for Manchester United, especially after his impressive season in which he scored nine goals and 21 assists. His status as a crowd favorite is evident in the passionate support from fans during the pre-season game against Leeds. This enthusiasm could further fuel interest in him from other Premier League clubs.

Fernandes the center of attention - but what next for Man Utd captain?.

Bruno Fernandes was in every way the center of attention during a historic evening in Croke Park. One of the biggest cheers came from the 82,500 spectators when Fernandes' name was mentioned as one of five substitutes after an hour in Manchester United's pre-season game against Leeds. The stadium would have exploded if Fernandes had a goal that was disallowed for offside or if a shot hit the crossbar. However, the fans' enthusiasm took a bizarre turn when some spectators ran onto the pitch to get a selfie with their idol. Amid the chaos, the game ended without added time and went straight to penalties. Surprisingly, Fernandes missed, while Noussair Mazraoui held his nerve shortly afterwards and scored the decisive penalty for a 5-4 win after the game had previously ended 1-1. The result was irrelevant in terms of preparation for the new season. However, fans' reaction to Fernandes underlines his status as a hero among United supporters, established long before his impressive tally of nine goals and a record-breaking 21 assists secured a third-place finish in the Premier League and enabled a return to the Champions League. Of all the players in the squad, Fernandes is the most adored by fans.

After the debate over his future last summer, when a massive offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal was mooted, United's resolve could be tested again. Italian heavyweights such as Juventus and AC Milan as well as Galatasaray are said to be interested in the Portuguese playmaker, whose release clause of £57m applies to foreign clubs. How United will respond to such a bid remains to be seen. In December, Fernandes admitted he was 'hurt' when he was told by United officials that it was up to him whether he wanted to accept Al-Hilal's offer. Now that his contract has entered its final year - there is an option to extend it for another season - there is still no agreement on a new contract. Fernandes is believed to have a desire to stay at United, possibly even until the end of his career. During United's previous visit to the Republic of Ireland in April, he expressed his desire to fight for titles. This attitude does not seem to have changed. But at a time when United are trying to keep wage costs in check, Fernandes could be right to point out his contributions - especially with Marcus Rashford, the club's highest earner, returning. The club's management could find itself in a situation that cannot be easily resolved. Michael Carrick certainly doesn't want to lose the former Sporting player. The partnership between Fernandes and new signing Youri Tielemans is already starting to bear fruit. It was Tielemans who fed the captain with a pass that hit the crossbar, demonstrating the growing connection between the two players, as the Belgian midfielder explained in a press conference on Tuesday.

What happens next

The coming weeks could be crucial for Fernandes' future at Manchester United, with interest from top clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray. It remains to be seen whether Fernandes, who plays under Michael Carrick, will continue his career in the Premier League or whether a move to another league is imminent. Fans will be watching closely to see how the situation develops.
