FIFA: Kevin Lamour fired after criticizing president

According to Bbc.

Background

Kevin Lamour has been COO of FIFA for two years and played a key role in the association's administration. His critical comments about FIFA's leadership and strategic decisions could have an impact on the future direction of global football.

Why this is important

The sacking of Kevin Lamour raises questions about the internal dynamics within FIFA, particularly in relation to its leadership and decision-making processes. Lamour's criticism of President Gianni Infantino and controversial plans to privatize competitions could point to deeper tensions within global soccer that may also affect other executives.

Key findings

  • FIFA COO Kevin Lamour has been fired, barely three weeks after his harsh criticism of President Gianni Infantino.
  • Fifa: Kevin Lamour sacked after criticizing president Gianni Infantino - BBC Sport.
Kevin Lamour, FIFA's chief operating officer, was fired by world soccer's governing body, less than three weeks after he strongly criticized President Gianni Infantino's aborted plan to sell stakes in competitions to private investors. A FIFA spokesperson only confirmed that "the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as Chief Operating Officer was terminated on August 17, 2026. FIFA thanks Kevin for his two years of service and wishes him all the best for the future." FIFA staff were informed of the decision on Monday evening in an email from FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström. Grafström told employees that the organization and Lamour had "agreed to part ways." Last month, Lamour described the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plans to encourage investment in football as "one person's project" and said: "The time is now for football's political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions." He added that FIFA's own administration had been "deceived" about the now-abandoned project. "Our mission - the mission of the hundreds of passionate, committed and exemplary FIFA employees - is to serve football," said Lamour. "A president must bring people together, unite and inspire them. Today we are seeing the opposite." Image Lamour acknowledged that he had a duty of loyalty to his employer, but also to "certain values" and the support of his colleagues. "If that means I lose my job, then so be it," he added. "I will then understand and respect this decision. At least I can sleep peacefully tonight." Lamour joined FIFA in November 2024 after previously serving as deputy general secretary at UEFA. He was two levels of management below Infantino. Earlier this month, Infantino received the backing of senior executives in a meeting in Rabat, Morocco, but, according to BBC Sport, Lamour was not invited to the meeting. Lamour has been contacted by BBC Sport for comment. In a letter sent to FIFA Council members and obtained by BBC Sport, Grafström wrote: "I would like to give you an important update about a change in FIFA's administration. After careful consideration, FIFA and our Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Lamour, have agreed to separate us. This decision was made after careful consideration and with great respect for Kevin, both personally and professionally... I felt it was important to give you this update personally and I would like to thank Kevin for his contribution and for his daily work and commitment on behalf of him "Thank you to FIFA. I wish Kevin all the best for the future."

What happens next

Following Lamour's dismissal, FIFA is expected to look for a new COO who can support the association's vision and strategy. It remains to be seen whether Infantino will continue to pursue his controversial FFE plans or whether this decision will be influenced by recent developments.
