SC Freiburg successfully played its last test match before the start of the season. Coach Christian Streich's team won 3-0 against the reigning Conference League winners Crystal Palace. The Freiburg team were able to put in a strong performance and appeared to be well prepared for the upcoming competitive games. Freiburg took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Vincenzo Grifo (6th minute) and Nils Petersen (27th). The SCF was also the dominant team in the second half and was able to make the final score 3-0 thanks to Lucas Höler's third goal in the 76th minute. For coach Christian Streich, it was important that the team in this game, unlike in the previous test games, was wide awake from the start and implemented the instructions on the pitch. "It was a good game for us, we took it seriously. Crystal Palace are a good team, even if they didn't play with the best line-up today. But that's no reason for us not to take it seriously. I thought we implemented it very, very well," said Streich after the game. Freiburg's captain, Vincenzo Grifo, was also satisfied with the team's performance: "It was a very good game for us. I think we showed that we are ready for the competitive games, that we trained well in preparation and that we can now go into the first games of the season with full concentration son go." Next Saturday, August 5, 2023, SC Freiburg will start the new Bundesliga season with an away game at 1. FC Köln. The game will be a special challenge for Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who will be Freiburg's number one goalkeeper this season. Atubolu made his debut for SC Freiburg in the friendly against Crystal Palace and will also play for SC Freiburg next season. Atubolu is still a bit criticized because he didn't always seem confident in the test matches. But the club is clearly taking the route of going with Atubolu. This also became clear in the press conference before the friendly against Crystal Palace, when coach Christian Streich and sports director Klemens Hartenbach clearly spoke out in favor of Atubolu. The question of whether Atubolu will also be number one in the competitive game against Cologne was not answered by Streich in the press conference before the friendly against Crystal Palace, but it is to be expected that Atubolu will also be number one in the first Bundesliga game of the new season. The game against Cologne will be a very special challenge for Atubolu, because Atubolu was born in Cologne and spent his entire youth there before moving to the professionals in Freiburg. For Atubolu it will be a home game in quotation marks because there will be many fans from Cologne who will also support him as a former player will be used. That's why it will be very special for Atubolu to play there in Cologne.
