Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has described defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis as an "absolute professional" while stressing that it is "normal" to have a lot of emotions and thoughts on your mind when there is interest from other clubs. England international Harwood-Bellis was missing from Southampton's matchday squad for their Championship win over Stoke City last Saturday. The 24-year-old centre-back has received two offers in recent weeks, the latest for £18million from Premier League side Aston Villa. "It's been reported in the media over the last few days that there is interest and it's deserved given the season he's had recently," Eckert told BBC Radio Solent after Saints' 3-1 win. "For me he is one of the best English central defenders in football. He has so much love and passion for this club, for the fans and the players in the dressing room. I think it is normal that there are a lot of emotions and thoughts when there is interest, so today we have made the decision to put our full trust in the boys who are on the pitch and then we will see how it goes." Harwood-Bellis has been at Southampton since 2023 after initially joining on loan from Manchester City and helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League in 2023-24. He played in the first league game of the season, which ended in defeat against Watford. "All I can say about him is that he behaved like an absolute professional in all moments," added Eckert. "Let's see what the next few days bring." When asked if the club would like to sign a replacement if Harwood-Bellis moves before the end of the transfer window, Eckert replied: "We are working in the last days of the window, there is always movement. I have full confidence in the players we have here and at the same time full confidence in the club management and Johannes (Spors)." The situation surrounding Harwood-Bellis highlights the challenges players face when dealing with transfer rumors and interest from bigger clubs. The coming days will show whether Southampton will be able to keep the talented defender or whether he will make the move to Aston Villa or another club.
