According to Sports.
Background
Ryan Gravenberch, who was seen as a potential successor to Fabinho, has struggled to assert himself in defensive midfield this season. His performances have prompted Liverpool officials to consider alternative options such as Pablo Barrios to solve the midfield problem.
Why this is important
Liverpool FC are facing a crucial phase as the departure of Fabinho has left a gap in their defensive midfield. Finding a suitable player like Atlético Madrid's Pablo Barrios could significantly improve the stability in the team. Given Ryan Gravenberch's current performances, it is crucial for Liverpool to find a player who can play strong defensively.
Key findings
- Liverpool is interested in Atlético Madrid.
- After the departure of Fabinho, Liverpool is in great need of a new defensive midfielder.

In recent weeks, various players have been discussed as potential options, including Marc Bernal. However, given his young age of just 19, it would be risky to consider him as the main solution in defensive midfield. The latest reports from 442.ch suggest that Barrios is already the subject of discussion at Paris St. Germain for the upcoming January transfer window. Coach Luis Enrique has a high opinion of Barrios and particularly appreciates his dynamism and energy on the pitch.
Chelsea and other Premier League clubs have also kept an eye on the midfielder. Chelsea are even planning an offer of 100 million euros. Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested. However, Atlético Madrid, where Barrios is under contract until 2030, has not yet received any inquiries. His release clause is €500 million, but an offer between €100 and €110 million could be enough for the player.
Pablo Barrios would be a valuable signing for Liverpool, but €100 million seems excessive. It is clear that Liverpool are in desperate need of a new defensive midfielder, highlighted by the numerous rejected offers in recent years. However, it would be questionable whether the Reds are willing to spend over 100 million euros on the Spaniard if they could also negotiate with players like Alex Scott or Adam Wharton for less money.
What happens next
Liverpool are expected to remain active in the transfer market to sign a new defensive midfielder. Negotiations with Atlético Madrid over Pablo Barrios could become more intense in the coming weeks. If this transfer does not materialize, other options such as Lamine Camara or Alex Scott could come into play again.
