Loris Karius, once considered the most controversial goalkeeper in the world, has made an impressive comeback after a turbulent career. On May 26, 2018, the German keeper experienced one of the darkest chapters of his career when he lost 3-1 with Liverpool against Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Two serious errors, which led to goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, made him a target for ridicule and criticism online. As a result, Karius had to struggle with the psychological consequences of this defeat and even thought about ending his career. But after a period of reflection and therapy, he managed to pick himself up again. Karius moved to Besiktas on loan in 2018, where he performed respectably despite difficulties with club officials and financial problems. After a brief interlude in the Bundesliga with Union Berlin, he ended up at Schalke 04, a club that was playing in the 2nd Bundesliga at the time. His move to Schalke was a turning point. Karius quickly became number one in goal and played a key role in helping the club gain promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season. He showed outstanding performances by saving 75 percent of the shots on goal and only allowing 24 goals, making him the best goalkeeper in the league. Karius started the new Bundesliga season strongly, even though Schalke lost 3-0 to Augsburg in the first round. In the following game against Bayern Munich, he held the goalless draw and was named the best player of the game. Karius prevented several high-profile chances and even Manuel Neuer, Bayern's goalkeeper, praised his performance. In the third round of the Bundesliga, Schalke finally achieved their first win of the season against Union Berlin (3-1), with Karius shining again and largely keeping the goal clean. With a total of 22 saves after three games, Karius is the top goalkeeper in the Bundesliga. Karius' impressive form has reignited the discussion about a possible nomination for the German national team. Although he has not yet played a game for the senior team, he is considered a serious candidate, especially as he has already worked with Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. Despite the speculation, Karius remains humble: "I have no expectations. I just concentrate on my work and hope that things fall into place," he said after the game against Union. It remains to be seen whether Karius can continue to play at this high level and whether he will actually be named to the national team squad. However, the once controversial goalkeeper's comeback is a remarkable part of his career and Schalke 04 fans can look forward to an exciting season.

What happens next

After a strong start to the season in the Bundesliga, despite the defeat against Augsburg, Karius will continue to be under observation. Schalke 04 will depend on his performance to remain competitive in the Bundesliga. Karius' development could also inspire other Bundesliga clubs to rethink their goalkeeper positions, especially if he continues to play at this level.
