Peter Bosz has new options, but the same problem

According to Vi.

Background

Kodai Sano, a new player at PSV, is seen as part of Peter Bosz's efforts to strengthen the team. His integration into the team could be crucial to fix the defensive problems and increase competitiveness in the Eredivisie. Sano will play alongside experienced players such as Filip Kostic and Joey Veerman, which could influence the team's dynamics.

Why this is important

The signings of Kodai Sano and Filip Kostic could be crucial for PSV to bolster their Eredivisie title defense ambitions. Despite the new talent, defense remains a weak point that urgently needs to be addressed in order to be successful in the league and Europe. The challenges posed by the double burden of the Europa League could increase the need to stabilize the defense.

Key findings

Peter Bosz has new options, but the same problem.
Peter Bosz welcomes new players Kodai Sano and Filip Kostic, but his team's weaknesses are still visible, especially in defense.
Peter Bosz has new options, there is no problem.

With Kodai Sano and Filip Kostic, Peter Bosz has signed two players who offer his team new opportunities. But the vulnerabilities, especially in defense, remain a problem. Kodai Sano sat next to the suspended Joey Veerman in the stands of the Philips Stadium last Saturday during the game between PSV and Fortuna Sittard (2:2). The new signing - which was officially unveiled on the same day - alongside the three-time champions who simply can't leave PSV. A certain symbolism could definitely be discovered in it: how new energy and proven quality should help Peter Bosz defend his title for the fourth time in a row. Kostic was not used in the first competitive round of the 2023/2024 season against SC Freiburg (2-0). But the cup game against SC Freiburg, which will be played on Tuesday (August 8th) at Dreisam, would be a good opportunity for Peter Bosz to bring his new player there. The line-up in Freiburg will also show how Bosz wants to deal with the double burden of the Europa League this season. The first round of the season revealed some weaknesses in the Eindhoven squad, especially the defense was vulnerable.

The first game in the league was won, but the teams from the second row were unable to convince in the Supercup against Eintracht Frankfurt (1:3) and in the first competitive game of the season against Freiburg (1:2). That's why it will be exciting to see how Bosz will integrate the new players Sano and Kostic into his plan and whether that is even possible without changing the team too much, because the well-coordinated nature of the first eleven is also important. Another question mark surrounds Joey Veerman's fitness. The midfielder, who had an outstanding playing time last season, is currently unavailable for action. His absence was noticeable in the Supercup against Eintracht and in the cup game against SC Freiburg. Veerman will not play in the first league game of this season against second division club Fortuna Sittard as he is not yet fit for it. It is still unclear whether he will be used next week in the away game in Freiburg in the second round of the cup. The club management hopes that Veerman will be fit again quickly, because with the upcoming double burden of the Europa League, the team will need more quality in the first eleven, and Veerman is a very important player.

What happens next

Peter Bosz is expected to use the opportunity to use Kostic and possibly also Sano in the upcoming cup game against SC Freiburg. The lineup will provide insight into how Bosz intends to approach the challenges of the season, particularly in terms of defense. The performance of the new players could be crucial to conceal the team's weaknesses and support their title ambitions.
