Top English club Chelsea have signed an exciting new signing. Geovany Quenda, a talented teenager, moves to London from Sporting CP and has signed a long-term contract until June 2034. The move could reportedly cost up to £40 million (around 46.9 million euros). The two clubs had already agreed the deal in March last year, but Quenda stayed in Lisbon last season before officially joining the Blues. "It feels great to be here," Quenda told the club's website. "Chelsea are a great team and I'm looking forward to playing here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown confidence in players like me and I'm proud to be here and to be part of this club."
Chelsea have officially confirmed the transfer and stressed that Quenda has a promising future ahead of him. The 19-year-old expressed his excitement about working with his new teammates and coach Xabi Alonso. "I am a very hard-working person and I want to help my team. I want to be known for my right mentality and for always giving my best for the club to win titles."
Quenda trained at Sporting CP's academy and made his first-team debut in August 2024. He became the club's youngest goalscorer when he found the net at just 17 years and 95 days old. He is also the youngest Portuguese goalscorer in the Champions League, having scored in a 4-0 win against Kairat last season. During his time at Sporting, Quenda made a total of 86 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals. He was also named the best young player in the Primeira Liga for the 2024-25 season.
In his first season, Quenda helped Sporting win the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal double, although they missed out on the championship last year, finishing six points behind Porto. In addition to Quenda, Jesse Derry has also signed a new contract with Chelsea that runs until June 2032. However, Derry are expected to go on loan to Sporting CP for the 2026-27 season to gain further match practice.
