Unai Emery has got Aston Villa back on track after difficult times. How his past experiences could help him. When Unai Emery moved to Aston Villa in October 2022 to guide the team away from the Premier League relegation zone, he was more than aware of the challenge that lay ahead. In an interview with the British television channel Sky Sports, he said at the time: The team needs a clear identity, a clear idea to win games, and I'm here to give that. He talked a lot, which also caused a lot of skepticism in British football, which is known to be a little skeptical about everything. Because Emery wasn't necessarily the coach who had created a good image in recent years. Villarreal fans were angry when he left the club in the summer of 2022 to move to England and take over Arsenal, which was not the transfer that caused a stir in Spain, but when Emery took over Villarreal in the summer of 2021, as the fans of the big Spanish club were convinced that only a world-class coach could save the club and bring it back to the top. But when Emery left the club after just one and a half years, the Villarreal fans were not at all satisfied. But Emery now wanted to show at Aston Villa that he is still one of the best coaches in the world, and to do that he first had to change the mentality of the players. "One of the green things we worked on was the confidence in themselves, the confidence of the players," Emery said in a recent interview with the British Telegraph. "Many players had to endure a lot of criticism in the past, many players simply didn't believe in themselves anymore. I wanted to regain that trust, that self-confidence." And he did that, the players believe in themselves again, the players believe in Emery again. Aston Villa are currently occupying a European Cup spot in the Premier League and are having one of their best seasons in many years. What is particularly noteworthy is that Emery is still playing with the team he took over, i.e. with the players who were 80 percent of the squad back in October 2022. There were very few new signings in the summer that didn't cost much, and apart from one or two players he brought up from the second team, he is still playing with the old guard. And that is also a sign of great trust in the players, and that trust is now paying off. Aston Villa is playing great, attractive attacking football, scoring a lot of goals and the players are just enjoying themselves again. A good example of this is the player Ollie Watkins, who was good last season, but this season he is simply incredible. He has become one of the best strikers in the league and that is clearly due to Emery's work. And the defense has also taken a big step forward. At the moment, as of the end of October 2023, Aston Villa sits third in the Premier League, behind Manchester City and Arsenal, and ahead of clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. It's a fantastic season for Aston Villa and it's all down to Unai Emery.

What happens next

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, Emery could be looking for new players to further realize his vision for Aston Villa. A new player, particularly in midfield, could help increase the quality and depth of the squad. Fans will be eagerly awaiting what strategic decisions Emery will make to further the team's development.
