Werder Bremen prepares to sell Romano Schmid to Frosinone

According to Sports.

Background

Romano Schmid, a 26-year-old Austrian international, played an important role for Werder Bremen last season. His move to Frosinone Calcio, a promoted team in Serie A, could be important for both his personal development and Werder Bremen's financial situation. Bremen have already received interest in Schmid from various clubs in the past, including West Ham United and Aston Villa.

Why this is important

The possible sale of Romano Schmid to Frosinone Calcio could represent important financial relief for Werder Bremen. Following the transfer of Mio Backhaus to SC Freiburg, the sale of Schmid could provide additional funds for further reinforcements in the summer transfer window. This is particularly relevant as Bremen are trying to improve their squad quality in the Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen is in advanced negotiations with Italian newcomer Frosinone Calcio about the sale of Austrian international Romano Schmid. A transfer could be completed in the coming days. The Bremen team is expected to receive a transfer fee in the high single-digit million range, which could even rise into the double-digit million range through bonus payments. Such a transfer fee would give Werder additional financial resources to be able to act more flexibly when looking for reinforcements. After the sale of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus to SC Freiburg for 12 million euros this summer, the sale of Schmid would be further income for Bremen. However, Schmid's contractual situation puts greater pressure on Werder Bremen to consider a sale. The 26-year-old's contract expires next year and there have been no concrete discussions about an extension. Schmid has repeatedly been linked with a move from the Weserstadion in the past. West Ham United, Aston Villa and Fulham were among the clubs that had their eye on Schmid last season. However, a change didn't happen at the time, so Schmid stayed in Bremen and took on more responsibility within the team. However, the move to Frosinone would be a surprising turn of events as the club from near Rome has been promoted back to Serie A after four attempts and has set ambitious goals under a new owner, US investment fund Clara Vista, which has taken over 80 percent of the club's shares. Romano Schmid moved from RB Salzburg to Werder Bremen in January 2019, but spent the first 18 months of his contract on loan at Wolfsberger AC. After his return, he played a key role in ensuring that Werder did not get relegated in 2021. In the following season he was one of the key people who helped Werder Bremen gain immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga. Schmid can look back on strong statistics, as he has had double-digit goal contributions in every season since promotion. Last season he even set a personal record with four goals and eight assists. If the transfer to Frosinone goes through, it would be another big loss for Daniel Thioune's team, but this sale would provide the Werder Bremen club with important financial resources for further transfers.

What happens next

If Schmid's transfer is completed in the coming days, Werder Bremen could actively look for new midfielders on the transfer market. Bremen also need to keep an eye on Schmid's contractual situation as his contract expires next year. A successful transfer could have a significant impact on Bremen's plans for the coming season.
