Background

Enzo Fernandez, a 25-year-old Argentine midfielder, has integrated well since returning to Chelsea after the World Cup. His former manager Enzo Maresca at Manchester City could potentially play a role in the speculation surrounding his future, but the current focus is on his performance for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Why this is important

Enzo Fernandez's positivity is crucial for Chelsea, especially at a time when transfer rumors are swirling around the player. Xabi Alonso highlights that Fernandez has integrated well into the team and is ready to shine in the Premier League. This could be very important for the team's performance in the coming season.

Enzo Fernandez: Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso happy with midfielder amid uncertainty - BBC Sport.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has highlighted Enzo Fernandez's "really good attitude" since his return to the club. This comes amid speculation about the Argentine midfielder's future. Chelsea reached an agreement with Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, in May that allowed the player to move for a transfer fee of £120 million. However, a deadline of August 14th has been set to receive relevant offers. Since that deadline passed last Friday without a formal offer, the club has informed Fernandez's agents that the player is not for sale in this transfer window. Manchester City, coached by Fernandez's former coach Enzo Maresca, are showing interest in the 25-year-old and believe Chelsea are still interested in a deal. However, Alonso has stressed that the player is preparing for the upcoming Premier League game against Fulham on Monday. Asked whether Fernandez will still be at Chelsea by the time the transfer window closes on September 1, Alonso replied: "Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he is preparing for Monday." Alonso added that Fernandez has "integrated very well" since rejoining the team after the World Cup and that he is "training really well." "I see him with a really good attitude and that's what we want," explained Alonso.

Manchester City are also in advanced talks over an £85million deal for Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi as they look to strengthen their midfield line after Rodri agreed a move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva left the club at the end of his contract. Reports from Spain suggest that Chelsea remain privately open to selling Fernandez and have appointed agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents winger Pedro Neto, to clarify the situation. Fernandez had previously tried to secure a move to Real Madrid but failed - although the club later denied any interest. Fernandez's relationship with Chelsea fans could also be complicated. Both whistles and applause were heard as he came on as a substitute in the 3-1 friendly win against Real Sociedad on Saturday. However, Chelsea have signaled they have faith in Fernandez by handing him the captain's armband when he replaced Reece James last week.

What happens next

With the Premier League game against Fulham approaching, Fernandez is expected to play a key role. Despite Manchester City showing interest in him, Chelsea have made it clear that the player will not be sold in this transfer window. However, the situation could change by the time the transfer window closes on September 1st if an unexpected offer comes in.
